...have always been??deeply grieved by the situation in Africa, but I resent the bleeding-heart bias of Sachs' book. No one forces people in poor countries into the irresponsible sexual behavior that leads to AIDS and neglected, even orphaned children. So what if the U.S. gives so little aid to the poor? Other nations also contribute funds. At any rate, money is not the answer...

...It has been??said that picking the right college can be as crucial to future success and happiness as picking the right mate. That's essentially the logic behind Destination-U.com a new online search service for college-bound students. It was developed by Greg Waldorf, a venture capitalist who is on the board of matchmaking service eHarmony.com and his mother Toby, who for 15 years has been privately advising high schoolers on applying to college. Rouse is a stocky (5 ft. 11 in.), balding, bespectacled man who looks like ?and has been???an elder of the Presbyterian Church. On a recent late-morning tour of Harborplace, he was dressed like an avuncular preppie in a blue button-down shirt, a loud madras jacket and Bass Weejun loafers. Ankling around his waterfront pavilions, he is not so much a monarch surveying his turf as a wide-eyed tourist in a wonderland of consumer goodies. In the Light Street Pavilion, he sniffs the potted hydrangeas at the entrance, saunters beamishly past scores of food outlets, surveys...

Typically, Mitterrand made no concessions to pomp or protocol. Said his brother-in-law, Actor Roger Hanin, who accompanied the President on the familiar trek: "It was just about the same as it always has been???except that there were more journalists this time." Dressed casually in a sports shirt and a navy-blue cap, brandishing a walking stick, chewing occasionally on a twig, Mitterrand made his way up the steep path with the same air of equanimity, quiet confidence and determination that had marked his 16-year pursuit of the presidency...
