Fine hops, top-fermentation, small batches. So far, the beers offered at bi-weekly Pub Nights in Loker Commons have been missing all of these characteristics. Brews in Loker start with one dollar drafts of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and reach their pinnacle at Heineken, Newcastle, and Corona. As a member of the Harvard Beer Society, the sorry state of the beer selection at Loker Pub Nights has watered down my enthusiasm. People go to bars because of the variety and quality of the drinks. And seeing as Pub Nights only serve beer, and not mixed drinks, better beer will attract...
...count ‘em—house brews, based on votes conducted in each House. But I had my reservations. Popular rule is great for government, but in this case I was a little worried about the tyranny of the majority. My peers generally know as little about beer as I do about cosmopolitans, so I was afraid that these House votes would only widen the selection available in Loker to Dos Equis and, gasp, Red Hook. We get drunk, sadly, because we just don’t have it in us to engage in normal sexual behavior, and many of us prefer a stress-free drunken hookup to more meaningful...
Harvard students will have to show their college ID to enter the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) Quad for the evening, where there will be student bands, food, and beer for students over 21, according to UC President Matthew J. Glazer ’06. He said the alcohol will be in a separate section of the event...
...seem to have almost unquenchable thirst. A handy new aid that caters to this craving is called Soda Stream. Fitted with a carbon dioxide cartridge, the shiny plastic appliance fizzes tap water into salt-free club soda. Adding flavor concentrates will make instant plain or diet cola, tonic, root beer or the popular fruit sodas. Compared with supermarket soda prices, which can soar as high as 50¢ for a 12-oz. brand-name can, Soda Stream at 15¢ per bottle is a bargain. The initial investment of $39.95 buys the mechanism and other necessary accessories...
