Going home is not yet an option in Afghanistan, though voices in Washington and other capitals have begun to mutter about it. As in so much of the region, they remain stuck, mired in the history of clumsy foreign interventions...
...Dubai's rulers know change is coming. No longer wowed by shopping malls with indoor ski slopes or hotels with gigantic aquariums, investors have begun to demand transparency. Its levees are too weak, and the wetlands that once protected it from hurricanes continue to melt into the Gulf. But the Lombardi Gras felt like a new beginning for a who-dat city of underdogs--especially coming just...
...assess the situation may help highlight the suffering of a community and provoke a regional response to a challenge that today is being left to Bangladesh alone to grapple with. Leaving Kutu Palong, the children are still smiling, the chorus of 'hellos' replaced with 'goodbyes.' Many lives have begun in this camp in the last decade. Many will end here, too, without a birth or death certificate to prove that they ever existed...
