...Although authorities quickly ruled out terrorism, the mysterious behavior of the plane has raised plenty of questions. Veteran pilot Antonio Luna had returned the plane to the terminal soon after its original 13:20 departure because of a technical malfunction. According to a member of the pilots' syndicate SEPLA, a checklight for the craft's temperature controls came on. A source in Spanair says the problem was fixed, and the plane was again cleared for takeoff a little over an hour later. At 14:45, it crashed...
Many men who don't consider themselves gay also, predictably, do not consider themselves to be participating in high-risk behavior. But even among openly gay men who know they are carriers of HIV, there is increasing carelessness. In a recent U.S. study, Dr. Kenneth Mayer, an infectious-diseases expert at the Miriam Hospital and professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, found that nearly half (45%) of the 201 HIV-positive men surveyed were high-risk transmitters: among them, the most likely to transmit HIV to partners were young men who drank heavily (more...
...West needs to respond to Russia's aggression in a clear and determined manner. That doesn't mean with force. Nor should it fall into a new cold war with Russia. But the West, particularly the U.S., should continue to mobilize the international community to condemn Russia's behavior. Presidential candidates Barack Obama (whom I support) and John McCain should endorse President George W. Bush's efforts to oppose Russia's actions and form a bipartisan stand on this issue. It is unfortunate that some of the candidates' supporters are engaging in pointless criticism of each other's public statements...
...Some education experts say the loud support for Laboureur reflects wider changes in French society. Primary among those are rising concerns, even on the left, that progressiveness has only encouraged worse behavior among young people. Fears are also growing that some of the brazen insubordination - and even violence - witnessed among youths in France's notorious suburban housing projects may now be cropping up as growing student assertiveness in classrooms in the nation's affluent city centers, and even sleepy burghs like Maubeuge. Polls show that a majority of French citizens back the use of limited corporal punishment to combat unruliness...
...sure what the answer is, to be honest. But I do know this: the anger fueling Russia's behavior now is very real, and I know exactly where it comes from. Just a couple of months ago, in Moscow, I sat in the office of Vladimir Yakunin, whose official public role is chairman of the state-owned Russian Railroad company. That sounds like a pretty innocuous job, but it's misleading in this sense: Yakunin is an old St. Petersburg crony of Putin's and, like the Prime Minister, is widely believed to have been a career KGB field officer...
