...long been assumed that the cavalier behavior of teenagers - driving too fast, engaging in unprotected sex, dabbling in illicit drugs - is due in part to their characteristic disregard for mortality. Teens, as any beleaguered parent of one can attest, usually operate under the presumption that they know it all and will live forever...
...public confession and that if she mentions she can't swim, she will get embarrassingly wet. But through all the creaky scaffolding, one can catch glimpses of the fine comedy this could have been - if only the characters weren't cardboard, the plot not a course in corrective behavior. Reynolds has a gentle, manly appeal, and Bullock, when Margaret cracks into humanity, lets her charm radiate like a lighthouse beam over a sea of sludge...
...torching the planet, empowering hostile petro-states and straining our wallets. Meanwhile, studies by scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and elsewhere suggest that more than half of our energy is lost through inefficiencies, calculations that don't even include the energy we fritter away through wasteful behavior like leaving lights on or idling cars. Not just to throw Washington's hemispheric antagonists...
...especially loud if reports are true that Honduran soldiers also rounded up the ambassadors of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and other leftist Latin governments, drove them to an air-force base and roughed them up before apparently releasing them. It would be a haunting reminder of the kind of benighted behavior that marked military takeovers in Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries - putsches that were too often aided by Washington - until democratic government became the norm after the Cold War. And it would all but nullify any justification that Honduras' epauletted brass - as well as the Supreme Court, which...
