...jungly world of music, there is a sort of composers' elite, whose members are deeply respected but relatively obscure. They are the composers who more often than not will be "discovered" by the public after they die, as was Bela Bartok. They get few performances because a) they write few works, b) they are constitutionally unsuited to the rigors of promoting performances, c) their music sounds forbiddingly difficult, and is twice as difficult to play. A member of this elite in good standing is Manhattan's Elliott Cook Carter,* who, at 47, is just coming into...

Visiting Stockholm last week, aging (71) Hungarian Communist George Lukacs added a grim footnote to Pravda's recent belated praise of Bela Run, famed leader of the unsuccessful Hungarian revolution of 1919. Bela Run, whose fate has been one of the mysteries of international Communism, was secretly tried and executed by Stalin's order in 1938, said Lukacs. Wiped out with Bela Run, he added, were a hundred other Hungarian Communists and "the entire Polish Communist leadership" numbering several hundred men. According to approving George Lukacs: "The Russians are now going to rehabilitate their victims in enormous numbers...

...rewriting of party history was still to come in the satellites. As one of the first acts of revision, the Hungarian Communist Eugene Varga last week wrote a laudatory article for Pravda on Bela Kun, the famous Hungarian revolutionary who ran a Soviet in Budapest for 133 bloody days in 1919. Varga did not mention that after he himself denounced Bela Kun as a "Trotskyite wrecker," the old revolutionary disappeared in Russia, never to be heard from again...

...Calgari, the Mummy, and even Frankenstein are gone. In their place are The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing, and Lobo. In The Bride of the Monster, one of Bela Lugosi's last movies, the virile fiend of Dracula has become a rather prosaic old alchemist. It is as if Lugosi, like Varnoff, had at last capitulated to the modern emphasis on drawing the blood from healthy vampires...

Recently, Dr. Bela Fabian, a Hungarian emigre living in New York, reminded Britons of their share in this same upblazing of indignation. In a letter to Time & Tide, he recalled the visit to London of Austrian General Julius Jacob Haynau in 1850. Haynau was known in Britain as "The Hyena" because, in suppressing the Hungarian war, he executed 13 commanding generals at the fortress of Arad, and ordered women stripped and flogged in the streets for speaking for rebels...
