...brilliantly performed: she has assimilated the character so well that her dialogue does not exist as lines, a guile-lessness making at once for high comedy and fine acting. Llody Schwartz's Kolenkhov is a natural scene-stealer. He pronounces "The Monte Carlo Ballet" with just the right Bela Lugosi intonation, he talks and gestures like a proud Rasputin fallen on bad times, and his Romanov leer is so hilariously Russian that one can smell the caviar in the pit. George Mager's classic internal revenue agent scene is a stunning shtic planted in the first act. And Suzanne Sato...
...sleeping provider. Contrary to Draculan film fantasies, the vampire does not fly but tiptoes to its midnight snack in a semierect position. Judging from Miss Leen's photos of the procedure, the creature bears far more resemblance to Lon Chancy hamming up his wolf-man act than to Bela Lugosi spiraling in for an elegant neck shot. Aside from the remote possibility of contracting rabies (bats, like most mammals, can transmit the disease), the only danger from a vampire's nip is botfly larvae, parasites that cradle in superficial wounds. People need not fear, however. For the timid...
...behind this show's musical rhymes is really just an excuse to throw together a potpourri of characatures: Rosalinda (Martha Ecclestone), the lead soprano, is a kind of Tricia Nixon who let her hair down: Alfred (Neil Cohen) is her would-be lover, a tenor with an endearing Bela Lugosi accent: then, there is Rosalinda's husband (Peter Kazaras), who is rather too confused to ever realize he's being cuckolded; and, finally. Adele (Leslie Luxemburg), as a chambermaid gone actress, and Frank (Bob Noonoo), as a jail-keep gone marquis. What the women occasionally lack in projection, the whole...
Hopeful Gleams. Velasco may well have found foreign embroilments a relief from domestic affairs. After overturning the Fernando Belaúnde Terry government last year, the junta found the treasury drained by Belaúnde's freehanded spending and borrowing. Currently, construction is down 40% from 18 months ago, and sales of dry goods, medicines, cars and appliances have dropped 25%. Unemployment has risen to 10% of the working force. Velasco has resorted to ruling by decree, and hopes to lure investment through a policy of incentives and the easing of bank credit rates...
...West. Unfortunately, things get sort of confused, as they have a way of doing with Andy, and the result is a series of dreary, druggy improvisational harangues by such luminaries as Tom Hompertz, Joe Dallesandro and Viva!, the superest Warhol superstar of them all. Now that Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi have passed on, Viva! stands unrivaled as the screen's foremost purveyor of horror. By the simple expedient of removing her clothing, she can produce a sense of primordial terror several nightmares removed from any mad doctor's laboratory...
