...correspondents covered Czechoslovakia last week from ev ery available vantage point. In Prague itself, Peter Forbath, who has been reporting on the crisis from the beginning, was joined by Friedel Ungeheuer, who hardly had time to unpack after his previous assignment: the Nigerian civil war. London Bureau Chief Jim Bell, an old Eastern Europe hand, toured the tight Austrian-Czech frontier to interview scores of refugees, and Stringers Bob Kroon, Eva Stichova and Christian Schwinner all pitched in at the Vienna bureau. As tension mounted in nearby Rumania, Correspondent Bob Ball reported from Bucharest...
...LIFE files. Some of the reports remain lodged in memory. There is, for example, Photographer David Douglas Duncan's report of how a howling mob of Hindus and Sikhs in Delhi flailed to death a six-year-old Moslem girl carrying her baby brother; TIME Correspondent James Bell's terse account of weary American troops fighting for No Name Ridge in Korea; Photographer Andrew St. George's file on a Castro patrol's foolhardy attempt to blow up an armored car with a crude bomb...
Coming from anybody but an Eagle Scout and an idealist of uncommon rectitude, that would be an insufferable statement. Evans first won office in 1956 when one of the two seats in a heavily Republican Seattle district fell vacant. In 1959 he married Spokane-born Nancy Bell, the blonde, hazel-eyed daughter of a mining engineer who wanted to name her Verna Equinoxia because she was born on the first day of spring. (He was dissuaded by his wife.) The Evanses have three sons: Danny Jr., 7; Mark, 4; and Bruce, 23 months...
...Pamela (Jill Bennett), an unemployed actress who swigs champagne and keeps a deathwatch on the only man she seems ever to have adored, her actor father. Pamela carps about everything from Americans to taxes to pop art, saving her choicest vitriol for a rival actress she calls "Lady Tinker-Bell" and whom she dismisses as "that blowtorch Mary Pickford." (Played by Kika Markham, she looks more like a striking diminutive version of Vanessa Redgrave.) The role of Pamela is demanding and singularly graceless, but Jill Bennett (the offstage Mrs. Osborne) is singularly graceful, grave, bruised, disenchanted...
Among those watching the cross-channel undertaking most closely are Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Buffalo-based Bell Aerosystems Co. Both companies manufacture their own ACV versions, also serve as British Hovercraft licensees. The fledgling industry's leader, British Hovercraft, was formed in 1966 by Westland Aircraft Ltd., Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd., and the government-run National Research and Development Corp., which together have pumped $48 million into the craft's development...
