Ustinov succeeded where others had failed by playing the opera, as he put it, for "what's on the surface." It turned out to be a poetic, elfin romp, somewhat in the spirit of Beni Montresor's enchanting 1966 production for the New York City Opera. Said Ustinov: "Too many directors try to make another Parsifal out of The Magic Flute...

...companies of all sizes and ages chattered to life across the country last week like firecrackers on a string. Manhattan's two companies faced off across Lincoln Center Plaza with year-old productions: the Metropolitan with its comfy,old-fashioned Traviata and the New York City Opera with Beni Montresor's fairy-tale setting of The Magic Flute. In neither case was the performance on much more than a ho-hum level; in fact, Spanish Soprano Montserrat Caballe's first Met Violetta seemed an almost deliberate throwback to the bad old days when singers were meant...

...Bing was so very wrong. There are two fundamental ways of approaching The Magic Flute: either as a symbolic, deeply philosophical work, as Oskar Kokoschka attempted (unsuccessfully) in his stolidly realistic sets for the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November; or as straight fairy tale, as Beni Montresor tried (successfully) in his lavish scenery for the New York City Opera in October. Chagall strove to incorporate both approaches and achieved neither. He viewed the opera in terms of color, reiterating that the total effect of the scenery should be "like a bouquet of flowers." When the opera finally opened last...

Once the house has darkened, the Met improves infinitely.. I saw the new production of La Gioconda, in which designer Beni Montresor put San Marco Square on the stage with no trouble at all. The huge, deep stage also did justice to three other magnificent sets. What is more, the sets were built backstage and can be stored there. Several productions can be assembled in advance, and one scene can be slid forward onto the stage as another is hauled off to the side. (I assume that the interminable intermission waits at La Gioconda were due to the fact...

Cauldron, Bubble. Key figure in the inquiry is 72-year-old Chief Humphrey Omo-Osagie, reputed founder of Owegbe, No. 2 man in the provincial government and, as a proud Beni, a natural opponent of Chief Osadebay. Witnesses told Justice Alexander that Omo-Osagie led Owegbe rites in his own home-grandly titled Osana House-in Benin City, even mixed Owegbe potions in a human skull. Second in Beni eyes only to the Oba of Benin-the titular ruler of the Benis-Omo-Osagie denounces the investigation as a plot to reduce the Benis to political impotence: seven...
