...topic he does not discuss. Bruce Willis plays Malcolm Crowe, the infinitely committed psychiatrist who pries the secret out of the boy and makes him understand that the ghosts are lonely too. One has to wonder if audiences eager for scarier visions of the supernatural will respond to this benign tale. But it unfolds with a patient intelligence. The Sixth Sense might not scare you out of your wits, but it could reward them...
...determined as his mother to protect his personal privacy. That is why he took up flying. When he traveled on commercial aircraft, fellow passengers would ask questions, seek autographs, exchange memories. He understood that they were people of goodwill, and he could not bear to be impolite, but the benign interest of others was a burden. Once he got his flying license, he seemed a liberated man, free to travel as he wished without superfluous demands on time and energy. Nor was he a reckless pilot. The mystery of his death remains...
Medical researchers believe they may have found a powerful predictor of heart disease, the health problem with the highest mortality rate in the nation. A study of 5,621 men and women over 65 published in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine reveals that the presence of a benign condition known as aortic valve sclerosis may be associated with a 50 percent higher risk of death from heart disease. The finding is significant because the condition, a hardening or thickening of a tiny heart valve, ?is incredibly common among the elderly,? says TIME medical columnist Christine Gorman. About...

The new findings will now prompt further study to determine more precisely why there appears to be an association between sclerosis and heart disease fatalities. It will also prompt doctors to monitor patients with the condition more closely. The new findings, if borne out by further research, could add a potent new tool in the battle...
Ecotourism does not always produce such benign results. In Ladakh, a remote Himalayan region in northern India, rural communities are overrun each summer by trekkers and their hungry ponies, which are destroying the limited vegetation. In Kenya's famed Masai Mara Reserve, overcrowding has become "a nightmare," says Simeon Kanani of Nairobi's Technical and Study Tours. In the mid-1990s the local county council earned $1 million a month for schools and hospitals from gate receipts, but at a price. "If you have 20 to 30 four-wheel drives in the park, is that ecotourism?" asks Kanani...
