Strictly vegetarian and teetotaler Adolf Hitler made the great exception last week of nibbling clear through the State banquet he gave Benito Mussolini and toasting his guest in sweet German champagne. Menu: caviar, soup, sole, chicken, ices and fresh fruit. In after dinner conversations among Germans and Italians in the suites of the two leaders one theme loudly, confidently recurred: "The days when Britain and France were the arbiters of Europe are over. There are now not two great European powers but four": i.e.-Britain, France, Germany and Italy...

...Berlin acrid yellowish smoke billowed last week around the Hindenburg Palace in which visiting Benito Mussolini was to be a guest. Bombing planes chased by pursuit ships streaked across the sky, anti-aircraft guns chattered, the entire Wilhelmstrasse quarter of government buildings disappeared in the thick smoke of fake bombs, and subject to severe fines was any citizen of Berlin who did not dive like a rabbit into the bombproof shelter nearest him. In the eleven years since then Gabriele and Benito have drawn somewhat closer, d'Annunzio telegraphing to Il Duce when the Dictator was resisting Sanctions: "DO NOT SOIL YOURSELF AT THE FOUL-SMELLING SEWER IN GENEVA STOP REMAIN IMMOVABLE IN CONTROL OF YOUR PLACID HILARITY." Last week d'Annunzio agreed happily to become Ass No. 1, succeeding the late great President...

...Pirate, we intend to destroy your pirate ships everywhere except in your back yard, and we invite you to destroy them there!" This seemed in London and Paris to be just about diplomacy's best joke of the year, but in Rome it did not take Benito Mussolini long to see that he could turn it immensely to his advantage in Berlin-and this week Il Duce is journeying to visit the Führer...
