Dean Irwin of Radcliffe has just received the honorary degree of LL.D. "in absentia" from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Seldom has such a degree been awarded from St. Andrews, the candidate usually being compelled to receive his degree in person. It is noteworthy that Dr. Benjamin Franklin, from whom Miss Irwin is directly descended, received a similar degree from St. Andrews among the first honors that were bestowed upon him. Professor Peirce was the son of Benjamin Peirce '21, who was also Perkins Professor, and a famous mathematician. He was born in Cambridge, May 1, 1834, twelve days after the birth of President Eliot, and graduated from Harvard College in 1853, in the same class with the President, taking his degree of Master of Arts in 1856.
