...little novelty in Mr. Nelson's "The Haven," and a good model at least posed for Mr. Parson's "Scott." There is a reality about Mr. Kirby's "Sonnet" which is lacking in Mr. Sanger's "To --?". The "Winter Symphony" of Mr. Norris is another good work, and Mr. Benshimol is deadly serious with his "Cry and Echo." But perhaps the finest piece of verse in the number, and a poem of genuine merit, is Mr. Rogers' "Victory." The new board has very praiseworthy intentions, and it is on the way toward success...
...that Mr. Thacher Nelson's "Evening Prayer" suggests irresistibly the odor of the steam pipes in an Anglican church, we are not attacking it as a poem. On the contrary, it has lines which render it almost the most notable verse in the number. The first line of Mr. Benshimol's poem makes it memorable, while in Mr. Brent Allison the Monthly has a new and interesting talent. The last stanza of his "Moonrise in Boston," however faulty, is poignant and beautiful. In Mr. Poore's poem, an exceptional technique is combined with a delicacy of feeling which is difficult...
...most undergraduates. Mr. Nelson's "Harbor Lights," though a little rough, is vigorous and contains one fine stanza. Mr. Rogers's "Oh Wonderful Wind of Desire" begins well and is spirited throughout, but in the last two stanzas seems not quite at home with its form. "Transition," by Mr. Benshimol, lacks the variety of pause and cadence that blank verse demands, and is not always happy or clear in its figures of speech, but deserves praise for its poetic quality. Mr. Howe's "Morning Song" fills two Sapphic stanzas, each of which has in the third verse one more syllable...
