...organizers’ irresponsible decision to hold this contest in Nigeria, a country already tense with conflict between Muslims and Christians, probably would not have gone forward if the Nigerian federal government hadn’t also been so bent on proving itself in the eyes of the world. Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria sees itself as the preeminent power in Africa, which is an accurate appraisal as long as we ignore South Africa. In only its third year of democracy, however, the country still has a lot to prove before it is ready to take...

...makes his way back to London, only to learn that he's been stripped of his 00 status. His quest for redemption and his effort to unmask the traitor take him into the arms of three women and the crosshairs of Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens), an audacious diamond tycoon bent on (what else?) world domination. (The writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade had the good sense to ditch the small-potatoes bad guys of recent films, like the one bent on conquering the media sector.) Bonds has bent baseball with his skill and power. He so petrifies opponents that they have abandoned traditional strategies to try to defend against him. Pitchers gave Bonds an intentional walk 68 times this season rather than face him, breaking the record of 45 set in 1969 by another Giant, Willie McCovey. Opponents walk Bonds in situations where no other hitter would get a free pass. In the National League Championship Series, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, one of baseball's acknowledged brains, nearly burned out his laptop trying to neutralize Bonds. In the eighth inning...
