Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd Bentsen has introduced several new gun-control initiative for Congress to debate in 1994. The foremost among these proposes to raise the fee for registration as a gun dealer form $66 to $600. Bentsen estimated that 80 percent of the nation's 150,000 gun dealers would not renew their licenses with the higher fee. Why do dealers number so many? Even members of the Cabinet seemed a bit addled. On the morning Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala told a Senate committee the bill sets no global budget -- that is, no limit on total national spending for health care -- Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen and Labor Secretary Robert Reich separately testified that it does. (In fact, there is nothing called a global budget, but the Administration hopes limits on insurance-premium increases will have the same effect...

...curious new species. "The political turf of parody and satirists has almost always been left," Jeff Greenfield says. "It's one thing to attack liberals. But to be laughing at them -- that's when some people get crazy." Limbaugh calls the grandly elegant Secretary of the Treasury "Lord Bentsen." He calls the presidential counselor David Rodham Gergen...
