There are aspects of the new woman in a rising generation of athletes and actresses: the powerful neck and shoulders of Dancer Sandahl Bergman, the huge forearm of Tennis Champ Martina Navratilova, the mesa-flat stomach of Actress Mariel Hemingway, the sinewy "thunder thighs" of Marathoner Gayle Olinekova, the eloquently articulated back muscles of Track Star Patrice Don nelly. But these are not changeable parts on the latest model of Barbie doll. The new body is to be seen and appreciated in the sum and the movement of its parts, the most important of which may be the brain that...
Onward and upward with the arts. First he outsolemnized Ingmar Bergman with Interiors. Then, with Stardust Memories, he scored a modest 5 out of Fellini's 8½. Now Woody Allen has transported Shakespeare's "wood near Athens" to upstate New York at the turn of this century for A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy. As might be expected, none of these homage-pastiches measures up to the original. But then, neither Bergman nor Fellini nor even Shakespeare ever tried writing a Woody Allen comedy...

He has, after all, challenged the government as a lawyer of last resort in many controversial cases--ranging from defending porn star Hary Reems to representing nursing home mogul Bernard Bergman to backing CIA agent-turned-whistleblower Frank Snepp to aiding the JDL conspirator. In some cases, his clever defenses advanced civil liberties; in others, they freed people who should be behind bars...
With elements of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night set to Mendelssohn and against a backdrop of nature photography, this lush film marks a partial return to Allen's earlier style. Working again in comedy, the veteran filmmaker has abandoned the subtlety of his more recent creations, but if the majority of the humor is broad, it is also notably less bitter than in his earlier movies. The impotent, unattractive hero and his bevy of shallow beauties are gone...
