Dark Suits & Mantillas. By 8:30 a.m. last Wednesday, tour buses from all over Europe had begun to jockey for parking spaces next to the majestic curve of the Bernini colonnade that guards St. Peter's Basilica. Cars and taxis began to clog the narrow streets near the Vatican. Out of them stepped bishops, priests, brothers, nuns, seminarians. About half the pilgrims were Italian, many of them attired as for a picnic. In careful Latin, he explained to the bishops the purpose of the council...

Then the cardinals, patriarchs, metropolitans, archbishops, bishops, abbots and superiors of religious orders, representing more than 90% of the church's hierarchic leaders-some auxiliary bishops and many Iron Curtain prelates will not attend-will begin their solemn procession across Bernini's piazza toward the great Basilica of St. Peter's. Inside the church, after Pope John and the council fathers have been seated, France's red-robed Eugene Cardinal Tisserant, 78, bearded dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, will celebrate a solemn pontifical Mass in honor...
