...Charles Manatt. Presidential nominees usually replace their party chairmen with their own people, but they generally wait until after the convention has ended. Even so, the firing of Manatt would probably not have caused much of a national stir had it not been for Mondale's choice of Bert Lance, President Carter's scandal-tainted Budget Director, to replace him. Whether they liked Manatt or not, and many did not, scores of delegates rushed to his defense. Willie Brown Jr., California's Democratic assembly speaker, sarcastically professed to see a plus for Mondale in the debacle...
...fine script and excellent potpourri of supporting actors round off this special movie. Bert Young appears as a rotund godfather type figure, who revels in good pasta and his small network of not-so-efficient hoods...
Many in the Mondale camp are lukewarm about Senator Bentsen, whose campaign style is soporific at best, though Georgia Party Chairman Bert Lance made a strong case for him when he visited Mondale. He warns, "If Mondale can't win the South, he can't be elected President." Another strong contender from the South is Arkansas Senator Dale Bumpers, who is expected to visit North Oaks in early July. Governor Mario Cuomo of New York, once considered a possibility, has firmly removed himself from consideration; he will, however, give the keynote speech at the convention...
ARMS began to attract attention when interest rates started rising in the late 1970s. A year ago, an increasing number of home buyers viewed the ARM as the niftiest invention since aluminum siding. In November 1982, Houstonites Sheila and Bert Christensen would have been unable to afford their four-bedroom house at the daunting 15% going rate for a conventional mortgage. But with an ARM, the computer repairman and his wife paid an initial rate of just 11⅞% on their $85,000 home. Now they wish they had never heard of ARMS. Last January their lender boosted the rate...
...last batch of primaries. At week's end state party leaders met in San Francisco. They hammered out convention logistics but mended no fences. "If Mondale had won all four primaries, this meeting would have been the start of the call for unity," said Georgia Party Chairman Bert Lance. "I guess unity has been delayed for a while." The Mondale camp had hoped the convention would be a four-day media event extolling the party and excoriating the President. But it could easily disintegrate into a bitter struggle over rules and delegate credentials, with Hart and Jackson hitting Mondale...
