Christmas in pastoral Bessarabia is visiting time. This Christmas a bitter, blizzardy Rumanian winter swept down off the Carpathians but the quaint railway cars that spin from Kishinev down to Galatz, Braila and Bucharest were thronged with festive, gaily-cloaked peasants visiting from village to village. East of Galatz two holiday trains sped along the winding, single-track line in a blinding storm. Someone had blundered, for they were running head on toward each other. Near Reni they crashed. For hours the dying lay with the dead in the heaping snow while rescue trains ploughed through from Galatz. Late Christmas...
...forced to capitulate to the demands of Chancellor Hitler, the world assumed that this was a step in the realization of the Drang Nach Osten. When he presented his credentials to King Carol without mentioning Bessarabia, Rumanian editors concluded that, despite Soviet geography books, Dictator Stalin has decided to drop that question...
...surprise, Rumania last week had a scandal in which King Carol had no part. In 1930 Rumania had a war scare over Soviet Russian machinations in Bessarabia (TIME, March 3, 1930), rushed to buy guns and ammunition. A French firm offered to supply them for $45,000,000. Instead Rumania bought the supplies from Czechoslovakia's great munitions firm, Skoda,* for $90,000,000. France, big sister of both Rumania and Czechoslovakia, was surprised and hurt...
