...Palme d'Or goes to..." purred the enduring French actress. And just then Luc Besson, the French director who served as the president of this year's jury, bobbed his head in front of the microphone and hummed a few bars from a plaintive song. The tune was from the winning film, whose name Besson finally pronounced: "Dancer in the Dark...
...this 2hr.18min. musical tragedy a post-modern masterpiece or a post-musical mess? The opinion of Besson and the Cannes jury was clear enough. So was that of the unimpressed, who found the film's story dramatically and socially inane, its songs lacking in melody or variety, its jittery camerawork in need of a megadose of Ritalin...
...clueless amateurs who display their bodies or souls in so raw a manner that the jury will mistake pity for awe and give them the prize. Von Trier had earlier declared that Bjork was no actress, as if those who'd seen the film needed reminding. ...ideological problems, the play does resound in its humorous anecdotes and astounding artistic talent. The movement, dancing, rhythm and sheer creativity of the production make it an enjoyable performance to watch regardless of your political scruples. Kudos are due to the direction of Billie Jo Jay '91 and Olivier Besson whose artistic guidance and inspiration are evident throughout the play. Individual monologues glow with talent, especially those of Tara Moon and Sophia Chang '01 whose enthusiasm and energy make the "vagina experience" all the more real. The artistic strength of the production certainly make it worth seeing, especially since proceeds...

This makes for a lively, nutty film, one full of clumsy, clanging battles filmed by the gifted, eccentric Besson (La Femme Nikita) with bloody brio. Besson is less confident of his genius with the court intrigues that bring Joan down, but that's where all the good actors--John Malkovich, Faye Dunaway--are. Dustin Hoffman makes a well-played but weird sort of grand inquisitor...
