Listening to Rainbow, Mariah Carey's seventh album, it's clear that the best reason to rock this New Year's will be to celebrate the end of the Mariah decade. Her record sales throughout the '90s have grown to rival those of Elvis and the Beatles, and to many ears the Mariah sound has grown indistinguishable from the endless cosmetics aisles and multiplexes of our postmodern world. ...Genesis, coincidentally another group of rockers celebrating their 30th anniversary, features the eclectic musicians (mainly featuring Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) from the '70s, '80s and '90s, but where Led Zeppelin could be considered power rock, Genesis is best categorized as power pop. ...hectic blend of music eventually sounds a little thin and is more exciting as an artistic maneuver on Beck's part than as a long-term fixture in a CD-changer. It's the most straightforward (and final) track, in fact, that will probably become Midnite Vulture's best-remembered track. "Debra" is a funk-love send-up; its proto-cheesy sound is so robust that all irony melts away. It's got joy, like the joy Beck had when he was so suddenly confident of "Where It [was] At." ...films such as "Fuck, Fuck, Fuck Me, Tim!" and "Sex Comes, Sex Goes." Rather, All About My Mother is Almodvar's exploration of the way "women faked, lied, hid and that way allowed life to flow and develop."
