...which Williams directly addresses the idea of lyric subjectivity. After referring to Goethe as “One of those ‘I’s who aren’t truly at one with themselves, / who in construing themselves betray the ‘I’ they could/should have been,” Williams implies that his own “I” is, like Goethe’s, not entirely trustworthy. However, although he casts doubt on the reliability of this subjective “I,” it is in fact the apparent...

...ideas, "Artistic and Intellectual Ferment" and "Joining the World" are hardly the product of much brainstorming and betray the Naisbitts' tone-deafness. Do we really believe that what the Naisbitts call "Chinese country music" will soon become a "moneymaking machine" simply because one peasant group's original composition, Song of Sanitation Workers got some favorable notice in the provincial press? However, Goodman’s sources betray the murkier moral landscape of the era of high imperialism—the book’s subtitle, “One Man’s Battle for Human Rights in South America’s Heart of Darkness,” makes explicit allusion to Joseph Conrad’s famous novella, especially apt given the fact that Conrad and Casement met in 1889 in the Congo Free State. Casement’s own description of Arana recalls “the unseen presence of victorious corruption” that Marlow senses...

...inspired love song. By this point listeners may assume that the whole album is going to be as innocent as their guitars and tambourines suggest. However, tracks like “Animal Party” and especially “Tastebuds” betray this expectation. “Animal Party” is perhaps too literal: the singer receives an invitation to a great party by “Mr. Pig” who articulates himself with pig honks. “Tastebuds” is a very forthright expression of a male’s sexual desires. (Though...
