There is here much surprisingly good verse, better indeed than I remember to have seen in a single issue of any other American publication. The Sapphices of Mr. Cummings are very fine poetry: the thought is straightforward and clear, the wording is singularly euphonious--as in a Greek meter it should be--and the rhythm expresses, while restraining, mature emotion. Mr. Hillyer's second sonnet on Antinous is richly conceived and adequately expressed; the reading of it gives me intense pleasure, in particular the remarkable sestet with the "Imperial hosts upon disconsolate seas." ...lines showed far better combination work than the forwards displayed against Cornell. Fisher was caught out of position a few times, but this was due in great measure to this unfamiliarity with the position, as he has played centre more than on the end of the line. Both new wings, however, played well, and Baker especially looks like a fixture in the position...

Although playing ragged hockey from start to finish, the University hockey team defeated the Cornell seven 2 to 0 at the Arena last evening. The visitors showed that they had been handicapped by lack of practice, but seemed to promise better for later in the season. The stickwork of the University team was wretched and the inability of the forwards to receive passes cost them innumerable chances to score. W. Morgan was the only man to play a wing position with any effectiveness, and the entire line showed a tendency to play out of position, so that whenever an opportunity...

...Harvard Club hockey team opened its season auspiciously, at the Arena last night, by defeating the Crescent A. C., 6 to 2. The playing of both teams was below the average, but the Boston seven displayed much better hockey than the visitors. Phillips, with three goals to his credit, was clearly the star of the contest, though Cutler, who went in at the last minute in place of Clifford, gave a good account of himself. For the Crescents Conway excelled, making both their tallies...

...Freshmen broad-jumpers have reported as yet and men are urged to come out even though lacking previous experience. This winter practice is especially important for developing new material, for the coaches have more time than in the spring to devote to training men and helping them to better their form. Weekly competitions will soon be held in this as in the other field events, and the opportunity to enter the various meets will also be offered...
