...substitutes showed up rather better than was expected, Rollins, McKinlock, and Weatherhead being the particular stars. The whole backfield was speedy and ran well under the direction of Watson. It is in the line material that the second string is weak. Should anything happen to any of the veterans before the big games, the coaches will have a serious problem to rebuild the defense. While the subs were able to throw back Bates' rushes, they were not able to make holes for their own attack. The seconds substantial gains were all made on open or wide end plays...
...Butler is the logical choice for fullback. He played that position some last year and is the best of the material that has showed up this season. Gustin '15 is his strongest rival and may get a place on the varsity. He punts well and throws passes better than anyone else on the squad. Dewever, Rankin, Studebaker, Connor, and Kerr are all candidates for halfback, but none of them are as good as the men whose places they are asked to fill. Rankin and Connor are too light but will have to fill in, at right halfback with Studebaker bearing...

Space which had formerly been wasted has been utilized as workrooms, store-rooms, and quarters for the staff. The main gallery is now better lighted and the capacity of the photograph room is enlarged...

It was the collapse of the pitcher in the third game last year that gave Harvard the series, and the same trouble is feared this year, though the staff has been better prepared for the final contests. Gile and Way, on whom the burden of the series, will fall, have both been showing late season form more than commensurate with the general improvement of the team. Gile is cool under fire, while Way has shown greater disposition to be erratic. Brown, Yale's mainstay last year, has not succeeded in getting into...
Harvard Training Quarters, Red Top, Conn., June 10, 1914. Rough water in the morning handicapped the oarsmen, but in spite of the weather conditions all the crews took short rows. Marked improvement in watermanship was shown especially by the Freshmen. In the afternoon, conditions were better and the University crew followed by the Freshman paddled three miles down-stream and back at a low stroke, special attention being paid to working well together and no attempt being made at speed. Late in the afternoon, Mr. Herrick took the second crew down to the Navy Yard. On the return trip...
