...very opening game, by defeating Maine 34 to 0, the University eleven showed itself one of unusual power. The weakness of Maine, however, made the team seem much better than it really was, many ragged ends being brought to light in the contest of the following week with Bates. There was no force behind the charging of the rush line, which the lighter but scrappy Bates forwards held to equal terms, and a 14 to 0 score brought home to the coaches the realization that there was much to be done. Nor did the team show much improvement against Williams...
...colleges in the new Rugby rules, and it was a result of this feeling that the Harvard-Yale series was begun in 1875. A contemporary Harvard publication in speaking of the game says: "Football will be a popular game here in the future. The Rugby game is in much better favor than the somewhat sleepy game now played by our men." In this match Harvard experienced considerable difficulty with the spherical shaped ball which they were unaccustomed to, but in spite of this embarrassment, combined with McGill's experience Harvard managed to hold the Canadians gainless by superior tackling...

And when all is said and done, the better team probably will win, for failures and flukes are as much a measure of a team as splendid gains and wonderful charges. If a team fails in a crucial test, it is not the better team at that time, whatever it may have been before or may be after. But, to be frank, the philosophy of hoping that the better team will win is curiously involved with a good deal of believing that...
...University soccer team played a draw with an opposing eleven, tieing the Swedish team from the Prospect Union 1 to 1 yesterday afternoon. Several weeks ago the Swedish players defeated the University 1 to 0. Considering the time and opportunity that the team has had to round into better shape, the tie score yesterday does not demonstrate any very great improvement. The single goal was scored by Smart after some good rushing by the forward line. Both goals did some extremely good stopping, and the score was kept down in spite of the hard shooting in which both teams participated...
