...Strings. Bangladesh, whose existence as an independent nation had previously been acknowledged only by India and Bhutan, was formally recognized last week by East Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, Mongolia and Burma. Pakistan angrily served notice that it would sever diplomatic relations with all nations that did so-a policy that will surely prove untenable as more countries follow suit. Britain, which has already promised aid to Bangladesh through the U.N., is expected to provide recognition in a few weeks. Despite the urgings of Senators Edward Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey that the U.S. recognize Bangladesh, the White House last week said that...
Formidable Tasks. The tasks facing the new leaders of Bangladesh are formidable to say the least. So far, their government has been recognized only by the kingdom of Bhutan and by India. Soon relief supplies from the U.S. and other nations will arrive to begin the task of rebuilding the country and providing for the 10 million Bengali refugees who will be swarming back from West Bengal. Longer-term economic aid for Bangladesh development, however, will have to wait until the government proves its viability. Politically there is trouble ahead, too. In India, the creation of a Bengali state next door to its own impoverished West Bengal state could very...
...26th General Assembly of the United Nations opened last week in an atmosphere of urgency rarely shown by that body in the past. In its first formal order of business, the Assembly elected Foreign Minister Adam Malik of Indonesia its President, and admitted three ministates, Qatar, Bahrain and Bhutan,* raising the number of member nations to 130. Then the delegates got down to business: a procedural test of strength over two U.S. resolutions to admit China to both the Assembly and the Security Council but retain a seat in the General Assembly for the Nationalist regime on Taiwan...
...alas, no visible editor. Though her prose is occasionally awful, it can also be crisp and energetic. The lady really is something of a latter-day Richard Burton-the explorer, that is. She has been trapped in a coup d'état in the remote kingdom of Bhutan. She has delivered a Masai baby in Kenya. In Bangkok she saw Buddhist parents "with static expressions watch their baby drown...
