When Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) introduces his friends to his new girl--a life-size sex doll named Bianca--some folks have trouble accepting it. Brother Gus (Paul Schneider) is concerned that Lars found "a fiancé in a box." One guy mutters that Lars is "in love with that slutty hunk of silicone." But most of the other residents of this wintry Midwestern town go with the flow. They've been urging the cripplingly shy Lars to get a girlfriend. And this one is gorgeous enough to be an instant local celebrity; she looks like Angelina Jolie but smaller...
Lars and the Real Girl, which begins as a standard indie study of the sympathetic oddball, soon reveals itself as a gentle comedy of community. Prodded by the town doctor (Patricia Clarkson), Gus and his pregnant wife Karin (Emily Mortimer) figure out that for Lars, Bianca is not a sex object but a love object--an outlet for the tenderness he has never been able to express and that his indulgent friends are thrilled to see bloom. It's one of the most honest expressions of bliss...

"She showed up at the read-through, and I couldn't take my eyes off her," confesses the Canadian actor of his Lars and the Real Girl co-star, a soulful, half-Danish, half-Brazilian newcomer who goes by simply "Bianca." "I found her endlessly fascinating. She's got beautiful little freckles. I would look forward to our scenes together. I was relaxed when...
...Marines contend that the V-22 is an assault aircraft and that no pilot who finds himself dodging bullets is going to fly it gently. "The airplane is incredibly maneuverable," says Lieut. Colonel Anthony (Buddy) Bianca, a veteran V-22 pilot. But the dirty little secret about an aircraft that combines the best features of an airplane and a helicopter is that it combines their worst features too. The V-22 can't glide as well as an airplane, and it can't hover as well as a helicopter. If a V-22 loses power while flying like an airplane...
