Best and least batty of the exhibits are Emily Blachman, who runs the boarding house, and her husband Jim. Emily (engagingly played by Mary Philips) is a bohemianized F.F.V., bighearted, bossy, shrewd, who keeps a roof over her family while the blustering, big-shot Jim (well played by Rhys Williams) tries for the sky. A familiar rudder-& -sails combination, the Blachmans ship a lot of water, ride put a lot of domestic storms...
...there any reason under the sun why they shouldn't. Though its ending is a little obvious and its plot at times doesn't stand up under close inspection, the picture is a fast-moving, well-acted, well-written, and excellently directed gangster story. Robert Taylor is a big-shot crook with a heart so hard that he doesn't fall in love with Lana Turner till almost the end of the picture. When he does find that he loves her the story becomes lightly trite and melodramatic, but up to then it moves along with a freshness, rapidity...

All the ward-heeling machinery which has been growing rusty since La Guardia made up his mind to do away with that kind of a machine age has sprung once more into action. Every Bronz big-shot and Brooklyn saloon keeper who has a finger in the Tammany pie is licking his chops in anticipation of an early feast after a long famine...
Many things happened during the 19 days that Generalissimo Francisco Franco's big-shot brother-in-law, RamÓn Serrano Suner, spent in Berlin and Rome. Japan joined the Axis. Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini made grandiose plans to conquer much of the world. The war moved toward the Mediterranean, which Don RamÓn's country bounds on the west (see p. 34). And Don RamÓn Serrano Suner, Minister of Government and leader of Spain's dominant Falangist Party, saw many interesting sights and talked to many important people, including Adolf Hitler...
