Biggest contributor is the world's biggest calendar company-Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minn, (it sells more than all the rest together). B & B climbed to the top partly by cornering the nation's top commercial artists (Rolf Armstrong, Earl Moran, Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Par-rish), chiefly because of its ruddy-faced, peach-bald president, Charles Allen Ward, 58. Before he joined B & B, he had tried almost as many jobs as it had calendars...

...Seattle, Ward went to work at four, left home at 17 to become a sailor, later drove a dogsled and mined gold in Alaska, fought with Pancho Villa in Mexico. In 1920, he found himself in Leavenworth Prison for violating the narcotics law. There his cellmate was Herbert Huse Bigelow (in for income-tax evasion), president of B & B. Bigelow liked Ward, told him: "I'm going to remold you; you're made of good clay." When Bigelow was released eight months later, he asked Ward what job he would like with the company when...

Before intermission, "Carousel" is a mediocre folk opera; after intermission it leaves all bounds of reason. In spite of his protests he is taken around the front door of heaven and sent in the back way under the "mother of pearly" gates where he meets heaven's janitor dusting off stars. By now reduced to nothing more than a slushy dramatization of the maxim to live your own life regardless of what your parents were or did, "Carousel" concludes with Billy returning...

...government did not really fall; it was pushed. In power 19 months, its 37 members had managed to control the 90-seat House by grace of the Legislature's 16 Liberals. Then bumptious Liberal Leader Mitchell Frederick Hepburn had upset the applecart by teaming with teacherish Edward Bigelow ("Ted") Jolliffe and his 32 socialist CCFers...
