...phone to call the local Ticketron, it should be pointed out that these rock worthies appear only on the album, not in the stage production. Nevertheless, Newman's work is savory enough on its own to guarantee a fair return under any auspices, except, perhaps, Carol Channing's. Bilious, outrageous and full of flinty, funny challenge, Faust has undergone sardonic transformation from what the author calls Goethe's "big brain thing" into a fleet Newmanesque parable of eliding destinies and colliding cultures. It is also guaranteed to contradict any lingering impression that, as Newman notes, "people think I've disappeared...

Stylish, in fact, hardly begins to describe Florine Stettheimer's work. It is besotted with style as an end in itself, and its delight in quotation naturally endears it to postmodernist taste. Sometimes it's tea-party Ensor, without the bilious satire; sometimes it's Rus sian ballet. There are traces of Elie Nadelman, Odilon Redon, Watteau, Hieronymus Bosch and an over-the-top capriccio of swimmers in some celestial spa titled Natatorium Undine, 1927. Her painting of a spring sale at Henri Bendel's, with ladies squabbling over the merchandise like angry hummingbirds, resembles a Pompeian grotesque translated into...

...written document, but it also limits the freedom of judges to import their own philosophies into constitutional law and allows the Legislative and Executive branches to make the policy calls. White calls Thomas' conclusions in the recent desegregation and affirmative-action cases the result of "twisted reasoning and bilious rage." Anyone who knows the Justice and his optimistic outlook, his ready smile and laugh and his gregarious and vivacious personality recognized this as nonsense. Moreover, it cannot be a mere coincidence that the court gradually has moved toward Thomas' positions on affirmative action, voting rights, school desegregation and the separation...

...most disturbing thing about Thomas is not his conclusions, but his twisted reasoning and bilious rage. In his written opinions, he begins with premises that no self-respecting black would disagree with, then veers off into a neverland of color-blind philosophizing in which all race-based policies, from Jim Crow laws designed to oppress minorities to affirmative-action measures seeking to assist them, are conflated into one morally and legally pernicious whole. He delights in gratuitously tongue-lashing the majority of blacks who disagree with him on almost every civil rights issue. He heaps scorn on federal judges...

When it was at the Tate Gallery in London a few months ago, R.B. Kitaj's retrospective show received a drubbing from English critics such as few artists ever have to endure in a lifetime. Indeed, the reviews were so bilious that this critic found himself wondering whether an artist he had admired for years might not have had a doppelganger-another R.B. Kitaj, pretentiously eclectic, too big for his boots and not much good with the brush, who had somehow snuck his God-awful daubs into the Tate ahead of the real one. But no; the show...
