...away of one of Catholicism's best-known traditions has finally gotten alarming enough that bishops have begun turning to modern marketing tools to reverse it. "Confession isn't about rationalizing or explaining away the wrongs we do," says Washington Archbishop Donald Wuerl, who has used radio commercials and billboard ads to promote the sacrament in his archdiocese. "It's about having the courage to admit them and experience the healing forgiveness that's waiting...
...With the Japanese market close to saturated, Toto has its eye on the American posterior. In July, the company unveiled a cheeky billboard at New York's Times Square showing a series of bare bums emblazoned with happy faces - until a local church complained that the advertisement was inappropriate, and the offending bottoms were covered. Washlets have spread across the rest of Asia, too. A TIME editor reported that on a recent trip to Tibet he happened on a wonderfully toasty Japanese toilet in what he called a "truly medieval fortress town...
Today that same market is telling rappers to please shut up. While music-industry sales have plummeted, no genre has fallen harder than rap. Lyndon Johnson once complained, tongue in cheek: "Sometimes I'm interrupted in my nap by Lady Bird and Laurance Rockefeller and about 80 others in the next room talking about flowers and roadside picnic tables...
...summertime again at Coney Island, the New York City neighborhood long known for its carnival atmosphere and amusement parks by the sea. This year, though, the mood isn't entirely festive. Uncertainty shrouds the original America's Playground, from the wood-trestled Cyclone roller coaster to the billboard counting down the days until Nathan's annual hot-dog-eating contest. An ambitious real estate developer has bought up two-thirds of Coney Island's main amusement district, and no one is quite sure what will become of it in the fall. "I've been telling everyone to live...
