DIED. Carl Ebert, 93, German-born opera manager and stage director; in Santa Monica, Calif. Originally an actor, Ebert moved into the then relatively new field of opera management in Darmstadt in 1927, with as his assistant Rudolf Bing, who later went on to run New York City's Metropolitan Opera for 22 years.
