When autumn temperatures fall toward the freezing point, wise motorists put antifreeze in their radiators. Many wise insects do much the same thing, reports Biochemist Fred Smith of the University of Minnesota. What's more, their antifreeze is glycerol (glycerin), a chemical that closely resembles the ethylene glycol that is the basis for many antifreeze brands...
...professors had simply floated to the top on the strength of longevity), Alway had gone scouting for new blood, and he quickly hired a dazzling array of new men for top jobs, e.g., Pediatrician Norman Kretchmer from Cornell, Nobel Prizewinning Geneticist Joshua Lederberg from the University of Wisconsin, Biochemist Arthur Kornberg (along with several members of Kornberg's department) from Washington University of St. Louis. So far, Alway has replaced three department chiefs, created a new department (genetics), added eleven new full professors...

Last week Minneapolis' Physiologist Ancel Keys and his wife, Biochemist Margaret Keys, answered yes in Eat Well and Stay Well (Doubleday; $3.95), addressed to laymen as well as doctors. Although he insists that coronary disease and early deaths from heart attacks undoubtedly have many causes, Dr. Keys reasons that an excess of cholesterol in the blood is almost certainly a danger signal. Also, there is evidence suggesting that high-fat meals increase the danger of blood clots, commonest cause of heart attacks...
Plant Poisons. To ward off itching and blistering caused by poison ivy and poison oak, doctors wanted a preventive to be taken by mouth, because injected extracts sometimes caused worse irritation than they were supposed to prevent. New York University's Biochemist Margaret B. Strauss developed the tablets, Dr. Robert J. Langs tested them on Coast Guardsmen clearing brush along lower Mississippi waterways. Result: up to 95% effective for at least six months. Trade-named Aqua Ivy, the tablets are nonprescription. Still under investigation: use of Aqua Ivy injections for victims who already have severe ivy poisoning. Doctors report...
