Renowned academics and intimate friends commemorated the life of famed Harvard evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould yesterday in Sanders Theater...
...Kerry Sieger were a stone age hunter-gatherer instead of a 21st century molecular biologist, chances are she would have the taut, trim body of her dreams. In college, however, Sieger underwent such a dramatic weight gain that, ever since, she has been a size 6 butterfly struggling to emerge from a chrysalis of size 20 clothes. Over the years, she has tried a succession of diets--the Scarsdale diet, the Nutri/System diet, the Michael Thurmond 6-Week Body Makeover diet, even the cabbage-soup diet--but the pounds she has repeatedly lost have relentlessly crept back...
...species of animals and plants are known to be threatened with extinction, about a third of all coral reefs are expected to vanish in the next 30 years and about 36 million acres of forest are being razed annually. In his new book, The Future of Life, Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson writes of his worry that unless we change our ways half of all species could disappear by the end of this century...
...protecting biodiversity: tropical rain forests alone, which cover 6% of the planet's land area, are home to more than half of all known species. But many wild regions suffer from human encroachment, and species are vanishing at a rate not seen since the demise of the dinosaurs. Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson, along with Wired magazine founder Kevin Kelly and Stewart Brand, who set up the Whole Earth Catalog, among others, are raising money for a 25-year, $5 billion effort called the All Species Initiative to catalog every species on earth--perhaps 80% of which are still undiscovered...
MARINE RESERVES Wilderness areas in the oceans are a relatively new concept. One of its pioneers is Bill Ballantine, a marine biologist in New Zealand with the University of Auckland who in 1965 raised the idea of "no take" reserves, which prohibit all fishing. New Zealand now has 16 marine reserves; others have been established in Australia, Belize, the Galapagos Islands and the Caribbean. In 2000 the Nature Conservancy purchased the atoll of Palmyra, 1,000 miles south of Hawaii, to preserve its 15,000 acres of pristine coral reefs...
