...million, depending how you count. For another, most of those millions of proteins are just variations on a handful of themes. Proteins with similar functions--be they in insect, worm or man--often share structural characteristics that are reflected in the genes that encode them. Structural biologist Stephen Burley of Rockefeller University estimates that the maximum number of distinct shapes may be as few as 5,000. The NIGMS hopes to construct a lexicon of shapes--barrels, doughnuts, globular spheres, molecular zippers and so on--that when mixed and matched will spell the shape of any gene's product. About...

Congratulations on your issue covering Earth Day 2000 and the celebration of the 30th anniversary of this event [SPECIAL EDITION, April-May]. As a marine biologist, I am gravely concerned about the delicate balance of the aquatic ecosystem and how it will be affected by global warming. I was appalled, however, by the choice of Leonardo DiCaprio to write about global warming. DiCaprio has adopted a facade of "caring" about the environment, but ethically he had no problem starring in a movie like The Beach, for which the production team altered the beach in one of Thailand's most cherished...

...prescription for feminine fulfillment. In fact, if motherhood is a mindlessly instinct-driven occupation, why bother with feet at all? In their zeal to reduce women to reproductive devices, the ancient Chinese eliminated the female foot, at least as a means of locomotion. More recently, in 1981, a male biologist implied in the esteemed journal Science that human females evolved to stand upright long after males did because what did females have to do anyway, except root around in the cave with the babies...
