...first biography of John Harvard has been long delayed, its publication is surely well timed in the month when we are preparing to celebrate the three hundredth anniversary of his birth. It was doubtless the scarcity of biographical details that so long kept the field free for the present biographer; and, despite Mr. Shelley's careful gleaning, we have here still but a slender sheaf of facts. Although 200 years may be an arbitrary period, we are accustomed to recognize centennials and their multiples as appropriate occasions to recall to memory the most important events of history; and surely in Harvard traditions the birth of the man whose generosity to the struggling "school" earned him the honor of having this great University bear his name is an occasion worthy of suitable recognition...

The features of the occasion will be a torchlight parade to the Stadium of all the classes with a bonfire and informal speaking on Soldiers Field. The time for the celebration has not yet been definitely decided, but it will probably be on November 19. November 29 will be the exact anniversary of the christening of John Harvard, but the date...

...Graduates' Magazine makes a good exhibition of the advantages which that admirable quarterly offers to the alumni and the University. The leading contribution is an interesting account by Mr. Henry F. Waters '55, the eminent genealogist and antiquarian, of his invaluable discovery of the facts concerning John Harvard's birth and antecedents. The fidelity and minuteness of Mr. Waters's researches make it doubtful whether existing records will yield any further information about the Founder. Should others, however, be emboldened to pursue the subject, they will be able to start with certain lines of inquiry that Mr. Waters's researches...
