DIED. RUSSELL B. LONG, 84, Democratic Senator from Louisiana for 38 years; of apparent heart failure; in Washington. First elected in 1948, a day shy of his 30th birthday, he became the first Senator preceded in the chamber by both parents: the legendary Huey P. Long and Rose McConnell Long. ...Athletic Department would be right not to punish the rugby team for this incident involving its players. There was no property damage and there is nothing deeply harmful about a couple of guys in their birthday suits running through a town park. This occurrence has highlighted the need for certain changes, but if unnecessary disciplinary action is contemplated, the relative innocence of the streaking should be taken into consideration. ...Things come and go--remember dry beer, "malternative" beverages and low-cal cream liqueurs?--but the industry has very high hopes for one ongoing craze: from chocolate vodka to tequila-and-lime-spiked rum to sour-raspberry schnapps, flavored spirits are multiplying like empty shot glasses on a 21st birthday. Flavored rums rose from 18% of total rum sales in 1998 to 39% last year. Flavored vodkas are similarly flush.
