...York Americans struggling for second place-the Montreal Maroons seemed destined to stay in the cellar. But in the American Division- with the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers well out in front-the Detroit Red Wings, in the cellar, were close on the heels of the Chicago Black Hawks. Thus seven of the eight teams still had a good chance to win, place or show, and the Rangers, famed for their spirited stretch finishes, were only four points behind the Bruins and battling for first place...
...crew worked in shifts like mine rescuers. They blasted and dug, encouraged during the first ten days by feeble, subterranean barking. By night bonfires lit their labor; by day they gulped neighbors' sandwiches and coffee. When they had used their no sticks of dynamite, they blasted with loose black powder. On the eleventh day, just after lunch, a cheer went up from the 100 Farleyites who had gathered to watch. For Spotty's spotted body had been reached, thinned by nearly half its previous weight, but still alive & sound...
Typical example of this was Portrait (see cut) by 9-year-old Rudy Reni of Roslyn Heights, N. Y., who had the Duchess of Windsor in mind. Cocoa was so low on world markets that working on the farm didn't seem worth their while. In a few months much West African cocoa land was jungle again, and the price of cocoa went...
...wooden scaffold, a bag of sand, a black mask and a short length of rope with a running noose might have been good enough for our grandfathers. But a hanging is no longer the fashionable thing it was once; a few U. S. States- Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Missouri, Wyoming, North Carolina and California- even kill their murderers with gas instead of electricity. Five of the country's lethal chambers have been made by the Eaton Metal Products Co. of Denver, which has a ghastly set of patents. Last week the fifth was sent off to San Quentin prison...
