...Greene denied the charges and contended that Security Board procedures violated his constitutional rights. In keeping with its longtime practice of sidestepping constitutional questions whenever possible, the court decided the case on the narrower ground of authorization. But in an opinion shared by Associate Justices Hugo Black, William O. Douglas, William J. Brennan and Potter Stewart (Justices Felix Frankfurter, John Marshall Harlan and Charles Evans Whittaker wrote a more limited concurrence). Chief Justice Warren seemed to warn that any authorized program that did not contain some provision for confrontation and cross-examination might violate "certain principles relatively immutable...
...After an 80-m.p.h. drive to the plantation of a friend, Long suffered what doctors called "slight heart failure," but recovered sufficiently to wolf a hearty dinner of roast beef, chicken and dumplings, corn, black-eyed peas, salad, beer, buttermilk and coffee. ¶ Raging at the wholesale desertion of his followers ("They're takin' a runout powder!"), Long began firing dozens of the unfaithful with the speed of a Cuban revolutionary tribunal. His worries increased when five other candidates, led by New Orleans' able Mayor deLesseps Morrison, announced their willingness to run for Governor against him. Meanwhile...

A magnificent Renoir Bagneuse...
Ahmed stayed in Mecca eight days, living in one of the small hotels that crowd the city. Again and again he visited the Kaaba, the small cubic building that houses the sacred Black Stone-the center of the earth for Moslems. Guided by his mutawwif, Ahmed queued up to put his head in the bowl-like enclosure to kiss the Black Stone, worn away by the lips of pilgrims, and added his kiss to the kisses of centuries. He made his seven counterclockwise turns around the Kaaba, three times running and four times walking...
Operating in the black for the first month this year, the Lehigh Valley Railroad chalked up profits of $87,121 in May v. last May's loss of $284.321. The Norfolk & Western Railway raised its income in the first five months to $19 million with a $4,500,000 profit in May. One exception: the New Haven Railroad (TIME, June 22), which fell deeper into the red in May with a $517,039 loss, its fifth consecutive monthly loss and $150,000 greater than its loss in recession May 1958. To give the railroads hope for even better earnings...
