...torture chamber. Then he meets Ichi (Naori Omori), a schizophrenic hit man tormented by the pleasure he takes in ultraviolent killing. Director Miike obviously wants to signpost Japanese society's ills and does so with a broad and bloody brush. Ichi dispatches his victims with a large rotating metal blade that flicks out of his sneaker. Heads, legs and arms erupt amid geysers of blood from his almost every encounter. A woman's nipples are sliced off; one male victim, suspended naked in midair by wires, comes close to losing his family allowance. In all this Miike's slick...

...Batman & Robin that had dwindled to $130 million on a $110 million budget), successful comic-book adaptations were few and far between. Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone, in 1995 was the low point, losing around $40 million. Now though, the cinematic landscape has changed. The vampire-hunting Blade grossed over $112 million in 1998, while 1997's Men in Black (both were based on comic books) became the 13th-highest grosser ever, with $589 million. The Leatherman has the most balanced selection, but it lacks the useful miniruler that's etched into the casings of the Swiss-Tool and the PowerLock...

...Audiences have responded with their pocketbooks; on the very weekend Washington and Berry were receiving their awards, Wesley Snipes, another black actor, finished No.1 at the box office with his film "Blade II" beating out such heavy-hitters as "Ice Age" and the re-release of "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial." But black actors still aren't fully embraced by the Hollywood establishment. Recently, Will Smith (who lost out on Oscar night to Washington in the Best Actor category) went public with charges that John Grisham didn't want Smith in the movie version of one of his books because...
