Michelangelo Antonioni was the high priest of low-energy cinema, of beautiful people who had the time and money to back out of commitment--who could afford to be miserable. This 1962 antidrama is a prime example of what critic Andrew Sarris labeled "Antoniennui." Monica Vitti, ravishingly blank, and gorgeous Alain Delon try, but not too hard, to lock destinies, framed in beautiful shots that have their own dry passion. L'Eclisse is a monster movie in which the evil creature is stirring, almost sleeping, within us. --By Richard Corliss
Most of Huizenga's stories involve Glenn Ganges, a blank-looking suburbanite in the 18 to 35 year-old range with two dots for eyes and a preference for three-quarter length baseball T-shirts, sans logo. Page one of the first issue introduces him to us in a wordless six-panel tableau of Glenn doing household chores. Less imaginative comix would use the sequence to set up Ganges as a straw man for obvious jabs at the middle class lifestyle, but Huizenga invests something more into his character, whose name, after all, evokes mystical rivers of the East...
Many artists and collectors in the '80s were also bored with the astringent minimalism of the prior decade. In Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump, an '82 picture in the Brooklyn show, he applied broad washes of pigment in a way that suggests a cross between Willem de Kooning's surfs of color and any kid's finger paintings...
...alert compliance officers whenever retail sonographers set up shop in their community. Since then, a few states, including California and Illinois, have proposed legislation banning such ultrasounds. In the meantime, says Copel, "physicians can do a fair amount to blunt the impact of these places." If provided with a blank videotape beforehand, his staff will happily pop it into the VCR and record the sonogram for posterity. Some of his colleagues will do the same with DVDs. "But we do it only when there is a medical indication to do the ultrasound," he emphasizes. And patients eager to have...
...right up to the door. Weise climbed out of the car and fired two shotgun blasts into the air. Grant started to run away from the door, herding students as she went. Brun, unarmed, walked toward Weise. The security guard was shot with the 12-gauge shotgun at point-blank range. Weise walked on, firing down the hallways. And then, in what seems to have been a random decision, Weise blasted the glass panel of Rogers' study hall to find more targets and seal his fate...
