...chinned Fred Mitchell, 45, was watching his sheep with a crook and a sharp-muzzled sheep dog one clear, shriveling-cold January night at the Home Farm outside Abbots Leigh village near Bristol. The sirens screamed at 5 o'clock, and Shepherd Mitchell was immediately surrounded by a blaze of 20th-century horror. Incendiaries fired his straw-and-wattle lambing pens, sheltering 34 ewes and lambs. High explosives followed the incendiaries and scared the wits out of the sheep dog, who promptly went A.W.O.L. for 24 hours. Fires broke out, spreading a pall of smoke over the city. Worst was the blaze that destroyed the El Monte lumberyard in the business district. Firemen, soldiers and police fought it for six hours, in desperation when apparatus ran short called out an ancient steam pumper that rumbled through the streets, belching a black column from its smokestack. Leander ordered her to halt. The lone ship's answer was to pull down the "red duster," hoist Italian colors, and blaze a broadside from 4.7-inch guns mounted on forecastle and poop. She was an Italian raider. Leander, with crushing superiority in speed and fire power, closed in and destroyed her "promptly." She was identified as Ramb I, 3,667-ton freighter with a cruiser stern, built...
...directly in line of fire, was struck at once, despite the gallant efforts of the Jervis Bay to take the full blow. His ship badly smashed, the skipper ordered his crew to the boats. As they dropped astern, the San Demetrio was struck again and began to blaze. The weather began to kick up. Two of the boats disappeared. All afternoon, through the night, and most of the next day the third lifeboat tossed on the Atlantic...
