While all the relationships of the family fit together naturally, the peripheral presence of Ronnie’s rebel friend Blaze stands at odds with everything else that is occurring in the plot. Introduced as Ronnie’s first female friend, their quick bonding suggests that Blaze will be an ever-present source of camaraderie for the estranged newcomer. However, this character disappears for the entire middle segment of the film, only to reappear at the very end as someone who Ronnie has to rescue from her own emotional crisis. The lack of incorporation of Ronnie?...
...instruments and playing without preplanned tempos or set lists. In one scene, the band takes the stage only to play one note before walking off. In another, they trade songs with Inuit elders, who nod off in time to the blues stylings of Jack. Throughout the film, the Stripes blaze through their 10-year catalogue, now rife with hits, accelerating and decelerating throughout every song and playing with an unhinged passion worthy of any classic rock or punk greats. At least, that's the received opinion about the work of his final decades: all those pillowy nudes, sunning their abundant selves in dappled glades; all those peachy girls, strumming guitars and idling in bourgeois parlors; all that pink. In the long twilight...
...prophecy for sure, but daydreaming is the prevailing ideology in Ko's republic of verse. "I want us to understand/ That what can be salvaged from our suffering/ Is not in the shadowy hands of our religious philosophies/ But in the charge of stars, flowers/ & the blaze of autumn color," he writes in "Crimson Leaves," also from Abiding Places. The poem describes the annual turning of maples across the entirety of the Korean peninsula, from the Tumen River bordering China to Naejang Mountain in Ko's native North Jeolla province and on to Cheju Island. By early December, when...
