...revolutions of the past three decades are acknowledged only through minor modifications. In Wayne Cilento's reconceived choreography for A Secretary Is Not a Toy, the secretaries give their bosses a fine comeuppance, and the all-white cast of the original (which in the 1967 movie version managed to bleach even the streets of Manhattan) has been racially integrated. A black woman (Lillias White as Miss Jones, the boss's formidable secretary) broadens the "brotherhood" in the last big song, The Brotherhood of Man, turning it into a rousing gospel number. ...lethal virus -- spattered the inside of the centrifuge. Fortunately, the Yale University researcher working with the deadly germs was wearing a lab gown, latex gloves and a mask, as required under federal guidelines. He also knew the proper procedure for dealing with a deadly spill: rub every surface with bleach, sterilize all instruments that have been exposed, then wipe everything down again with alcohol. One assailant threw a container of steaming bleach water in Dade's face and another grabbed him from behind. The group's leader then stabbed Dade several times with a homemade knife. One suspect was caught immediately, another shortly after he fled. A guard identified the third as Schlup, whom authorities found eating a fish sandwich in the prison cafeteria...

...paper companies worry about recouping investments they will have to make in recycling, but from their viewpoint, the policy could have been worse. The President could have forbidden government purchases of paper whitened by chlorine bleach. Environmentalists charge that chlorine-containing waste chemicals contaminate waterways around paper mills; companies say the pollution is limited. While Clinton did not insist on chlorine-free paper, he did relax the whiteness standard for federal stationery. Companies that offer not-so-bright but eco-friendly paper may find some big customers in Washington...
