...Generals' Shame Your cover photo paints a tellingly bleak picture of Burma's suffering [May 19]. It is ludicrous that amid such a catastrophe the military junta asked people to vote on a constitutional referendum to enable their sham "discipline-flourishing democracy." It is even more reprehensible that, while people are starving and dying in the cyclone's wake, the military is hampering the efforts of relief workers. Too bad Burma's resources are not as coveted as those of the Middle East. If they were, surely the U.S. and a coalition of other willing allies would have forced more...
Celebrated Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan was awarded Best Director in Cannes on Sunday. Perhaps now Turks will finally go see his movies. Despite being heralded globally for his movie magic, Ceylan's films - slow-paced, poetic tales of individuals struggling against the bleak backdrop of modern Turkey - routinely flop back home. Coming on the next-to-last day of a mostly...
...Rising Down,” the lush horns that fanfared “The Tipping Point” have disappeared, replaced by the icy production values that “Game Theory” hinted at. The album’s sonics are unrelentingly bleak: everything’s minor-key. Drummer ?uestlove’s usual crisp snare work has to wade through a sea of fuzzy synths to make itself heard. While a headphone album is nothing new for the Roots, the unenergetic electronic textures get claustrophobic quickly. The album features vocalist cameos, but it doesn?...
...local drug market, where dealers hawk cocaine and heroin stored in perfume vials to eager addicts at all hours of the day. Given the impossibility of arresting thousands of users and dealers (often children or teenagers without any other means of income), the situation Moskos paints is bleak: the police, handicapped by unnecessary regulations, are ultimately performing a futile exercise...
