...Chick Elementary School represents the kind of school Newsome thinks there should be more of. Chick, whose African-centered program was fashioned by its enterprising principal, Audrey Bullard, occupies a bleak, brown brick building in a rundown east-side neighborhood of Kansas City. Ninety-eight percent of Chick's 327 students are black. "With a Eurocentric curriculum, it appears one race is superior over the others," says Bullard. "The African-centered curriculum makes them feel, 'I'm a part of this. I'm not on the outside looking in.'" Something must be working: Chick's students outscore some...
This exploitation of white resentment has had drastic effects. The exploitation of voter resentment can have the same effect. Surely, we can learn from the lessons of painkillers and apply them to political campaigns. Words, and especially negative words, can turn people off to entire processes. With the bleak portrait of government facing them in the media every day, Americans in the best-case scenario would react with apathy, and in the worst case with some action, at the words of those who exploit fears and tensions...

The day after he came aboard he was disturbed to learn that Forbes was planning a new round of negative ads. Kemp telephoned Dole headquarters, wanting to speak to the Senator. "The good news," said a top Dole fund raiser, "is that Dole has a short memory...
...cellar-like Kronauer Space is well-suited for the play, which alternates between outdoor scenes and the dungeon-like atmosphere of the recovery center. Set designer Kate Khamsi '95 deserves kudos for rendering both the interior and exterior settings with a bleak but psychedelic flair. Inside the recovery center, for instance, the common room is decked out in metal, with a silver duct-taped couch and a plant partially painted silver. These touches do more than conjure up images of Warhol's factory; they remind the audience how robotic pharmacueticals can make people...
