...many schools these realities blend into a panoply of horrors for teachers and administrators. Odette Dunn Harris, principal of William Penn High School in Philadelphia, talks of confiscating crack bags from student pushers in a neighborhood torn by gang wars and racial strife. When she first arrived at the school, "they had riots in the lunchroom. The fire gong used to go off every five minutes, and that was the cue for the kids to break out." His broker and lawyer pals are either consciences or bad company. The film seems intended as a blend of morality play and classical satire -- Everyman meets Volpone. Stone always comes at you with big dreams and nightmares; he wants the first and last word on every subject he touches, whether Central America (Salvador), Viet Nam (Platoon) or Wall Street. ...modern synth pop, from Midwestern rock to New York rap. The highlights are plentiful. Alison Moyet's "The Coventry Carol" and Sting's "Gabriel's Message" are the two purely spiritual songs, and they are beautifully austere. Sting sings a capella except for a few drum beats, while Moyet blends her ancient sounding carol with simple synthesizer accompaniment producing a haunting blend of present and past...
