...mascaraed eyes, the fluttering false lashes, the layers of professionally applied makeup, the highlighted, upswept hair. Look at the clothes: the hand-stitched gowns, the Princess Di chapeaus, the high heels. Then do a double take over the teensy stick-figure bodies and the immature voices belting out God Bless America and Tomorrow. Like some human optical illusion, JonBenet Ramsey and her besequinned fellow beauty-pageant contestants are not in fact fully developed adults. They are pint-size little women often done up like trick ponies...
...Francisco's venerable A.C.T. troupe is reviving its renowned 1976 production, absent since 1993. Says director of marketing Robert Sweibel: "It's the closest thing we have to a surefire hit, and it helps us underwrite more adventurous programming." Says Fintel: "To me, Abraham is the person, and God is the wind." It is a lovely image, and as Fintel teaches it, Genesis seems a lovely book. Since he has followed God's instruction, Fintel explains, "Abraham is a hero...
Forty young Lakota warriors stand in prayer at the edge of a South Dakota pasture. They bless themselves with sage smoke and thank the spirit of the buffalo that is about to give up its life. A few bison look up from their grazing as a pickup truck churns slowly across the field. Then the crack of a rifle scatters the herd: Rocky Afraid-of-Hawk drops a yearling bull with one clean shot. The teenage warriors, dressed in Fila sneakers and No Fear sweatshirts, scramble in for a closer look as the older men skin the carcass. Later...
