Like a dignified dowager being escorted into a drawing room, the glistening white ship moved up New York's harbor last week. A Navy blimp, helicopters, patrol boats, tugs and water-tossing fireboats hovered around her. A "home-longing pennant"-42 meters long for the 42 months she was abuilding-fluttered from her aftermast. Other liners roared their welcomes to the Swedish American Line's Kungsholm* newest addition to the North Atlantic fleet and a big sister to the Gripsholm...
...great disappointment of Sherlock Holmes, however, is the quality of the principals' performances. While Nigel Bruce played Watson as a slow, but solid aide to Holmes, Jack Raine makes him a retarded Colonel Blimp, rather mildly interested in Holmes' adventures. Similarly, Thomas Gomez is badly miscast as Professor Moriarity. Though unctuously sinister, Gomez looks more like an indigent music teacher than a Napoleon of crime. His great girth and flowing hair hardly suit the "lean, ascetic" arch-criminal of Doyle's imagination...

Her crew compartment is a forged and welded steel sphere about 8 ft. in diameter with walls 3½ in. thick. This is the only part designed to resist the enormous pressure of the deep sea. It hangs below a "floater": a submarine-shaped hull of thin steel about 60 feet long and filled with 22,000 gallons of gasoline...
...floater has two small, electrically driven propellers, which move it horizontally. They make the Trieste more like a blimp than like the passively floating balloon in which Professor Piccard, then a mere 48, set an altitude record...
Since the war against the Mau Mau is run from Nairobi, and Nairobi is by & large run by the sons of old Colonel Blimp, the ex-Indian army colonels, the not-so-young younger sons of aristocratic families with hyphenated names, it is not surprising that the embattled farmers explode with numerous complaints about Nairobi's incompetence and muddle-mindedness. Kenya, though by population a small country, has a baffling superstructure of government departments. "There is no liaison whatsoever," an upcountry district commissioner complained. "God knows what happens to my reports when they reach Nairobi; they never bear...
