...always in the T formation world of football, the congestion of good players is heavy at quarterback. Three of the year's best are California's Joe Kapp, a vicious blocker and tackier who has completed 52 of 87 passes, run for a surprising (for a quarterback) 540 yds.; Iowa's pass-happy Randy Duncan (91 completions in 151 tries); and Notre Dame Newcomer George Izo, who was promoted to the first string only at midseason, has since completed 47 out of 77 passes for seven touchdowns. But 1958 may be best remembered as the year that...
...decisive 26-0 victory over Columbia. Pictured above is Lion halfback Harvey Brookins (34) attempting unsuccessfully to circle the left side of the Crimson line. End Doug Hamilton (87) is moving in to make the tackle, while tackle Pete Briggs (77) applies the old bearhug to a Columbia blocker. ...sent the Lions back deep in their own ground with his kicks, and in the third period he prevented a possible disaster. Set to punt from the Harvard 30, he got a pass from center which sailed over his head, but raced down to grab it, eluded a blocker, and sent a hurried, low kick bouncing down to the Columbia...
Purpose & Power. Crow's neatly proportioned (6 ft. 2 in., 214 lbs.) frame surrounds awesome talent. His choppy, hustling stride sheds tacklers; he is a vicious blocker and a shrewd, swift safety man. On offense or defense, his specialty is hitting opponents with skill, purpose and power. Last year, when Tackle Bobby Lockett teamed up with End John Tracey to bring down Texas Christian's great Halfback Jim Swink, Crow came up to "secure" the tackle, as the football euphemism goes. He knocked both Swink and Tracey goggle-eyed, and Tackle Lockett was belted right...
Crews, at 195 pounds, is a fast guard and able blocker. The rest of the line doesn't measure up to the left side in ability, but it has some good blockers in guard Larry Kalesnik and tackle Jim Cerasoli. The center will probably be sophomore Don Warburton, who has improved steadily throughout the year, although senior Dick Carolan will undoubtedly play a good deal. The right end is another fine pass receiver, Russell Frazier, who scored the second touchdown in Brown's 14-6 win over the varsity last year...
